I Found The Worst Movers “Since 1971”
I need to put this business on blast because they are running a massive scam on both clients and employees in the Iredell – Mooresville – Charlotte area.
Their public image is the opposite of what they represent IRL. They used to advertise that they were “in business since 1971” and “veteran owned and operated.” Both fake statements. William Rob Downing registered Port City Movers in 2018 after another defunct company owned the name Port City Transfer from 2012-2018 and went out of business. Port City Movers is actually a tradename ( one of many ) for 126 Haney Drive Moving. The 1971 story creates an illusion this is a long-standing trusted mover.
On top of that, they advertise fake physical locations in Charlotte and Greenville to look bigger than they are. Because they don’t actually have shops there, they have been scamming by charging clients an hour-plus of travel time each way for driving out from the coast. The owner has several businesses and refuses to pay the actual movers a decent wage or insurance – often hiring people that cannot get jobs anywhere else and are stuck.

I myself was lured buy an attractive contract and moved up from Florida. I suggest you do some heavy recon on their actual team like I should’ve done initially. The owner failed to abide by the contract and discriminated against me giving my leads away. When I asked, they fired me in retaliation. Not to mention reviews that are manipulated by their crm company. They retaliated hard when I blew the whistle, but they are finally about to face the music. They thought they could cover up their fake history and fraudulent inducement and bait and switch scams by scrubbing their website and trying to block my unemployment. They also make people sign and NDA so they cannot write reviews online without discussion – thankfully I did not fold for the money they offered so I will write for everyone! A big F U to William “Rob” Downing and Travis Cook for being super insecure and not able to deal with a female “gasp” that knows more about the industry than you and your top sales guy. It takes a truly unique level of management style to feel so deeply threatened by a competent woman that you have to break contracts, manipulate leads, and hide behind empty NDAs just to protect your fragile egos. I genuinely hope you find the security you’re looking for—and a better lawyer, because you’re both going to need one very soon.
